In the death of Grandpa Bowers(as he
was familiarly called by all who know him) was the passing of Falls County's
noblest citizens, having resided in the county nearly thirty years, was born
in Davidson County, North Carolina, 88 years ago the 10th day of last
August; was married there to Miss Aurillia King in 1847, moved to
Mississippi in 1848 with his brother , Geo. Bowers, who left there soon and
located in Iowa, and who died there some years ago at the ripe old age of 83
years.
Grandpa Bowers located near Oxford,
Miss., lived there until 1886, at which time he moved with his family to
Bell County, Texas, after four years he located at Blevins and has spent the
remainder of his life here.
He enlisted under the colors of the
Southern Confederacy in the Twenty-ninth Mississippi, under Captain Isom. He
loved to tell of having served his country through all that gisantic
struggle with honor and distinction, and having never fired a gun. He had
been in feeble health for some two years, the primary cause of his demise
was weakness of his heart action. He passed awayas the gentle breeze,
without a murmur, entirely conscious to the last moment, expressing a desire
to depart and be with his God.
His life was that of a quiet,
unassuming but devout Christian, having been a faithful member of the church
the greater part of his life.
Nine children were born to this
union. Those living were at his bedside: Mrs. S. A. Parham, Cego; Mrs. Ben
Taylor, Marlin; James C. and W. F., Blevins, and D. L. of Lorena. The others
of his children who preceded him to the better world were Mrs. J. Y.
Caldwell, Holland; Mrs. S. E. McCord, Paris, Mississippi; Thomas, who also
died in Mississippi, and Robert R. who died in Blevins some years ago.
Besides his living children, hi is
survived by a large number of grand and great grand children, and his aged
and grief-stricken campanion, who had reached the ripe old age of 84 years.
Thursday afternoon, September 9th,
at 4p.m. , the spirit of this good man took its everlasting flight. He was
interred in the Blevins cemetery Friday evening, the 10th inst., in the
midst of a large throng of friends were gathered to pay their last respects
to one they loved so well. The funeral services were in charge of Rev. Chas.
Clark, who for a number of years had been a close friend to the deceased.
A friend.
